Serpentine and The FLAG Art Foundation Name Gozo Yoshimasu Winner of Inaugural £1 Million Art Prize
Serpentine and The FLAG Art Foundation have awarded the inaugural Serpentine x FLAG Art Foundation Prize to Gozo Yoshimasu. A jury of Michelle Kuo, Venus Lau, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jon Rider and Rirkrit Tiravanija selected the recipient after convening in London on 23 April. Yoshimasu, born in 1939 in Tokyo where he lives and works, will stage a solo exhibition at Serpentine North in autumn 2027 followed by a presentation at the FLAG Art Foundation in New York in spring 2028. Over the next decade the prize will distribute £1 million, or £200,000 biennially to five artists, establishing it as the UK’s largest contemporary art prize given to a single artist.
The Signal
The award supplies resources and institutional platforms at a pivotal career point, enabling Yoshimasu to pursue new directions in his interdisciplinary practice that merges poetry, performance, photography and gozoCiné. The collaboration between the two institutions creates an ongoing transatlantic dialogue and positions Yoshimasu for his first major solo institutional presentations in both the UK and the United States, accompanied by a catalogue and live programme. Collectors and curators will note the emphasis on sustained support rather than one-off recognition, signalling how such prizes can accelerate an artist’s visibility through coordinated exhibitions and publications.
