The Facts

Rae-Yen Song 宋瑞渊 (b. 1993, Edinburgh) is featured in British Art Show 10: A Chorus of Strangers, spotlighted by Southbank Centre, the UK's largest arts centre. The Glasgow-based artist's series '••••song~xian••••' (2025–26) comprises eight ceramic statues that translate pond organisms into hybrid ancestor-deity forms, developed in collaboration with a microbiologist. The sculptures, raised on unfired mud, are part of an interdisciplinary practice spanning sculpture, textile, sound, moving image, performance and installation. Song studied at Glasgow School of Art and held her first institutional solo exhibition at Manchester's esea contemporary in 2020.

The Signal

Inclusion in British Art Show 10, one of the UK's most significant recurring exhibitions, gives Song a prominent institutional platform. For collectors, the new ceramic series signals an artist whose interdisciplinary range and collaborative, science-informed process may gain wider visibility. The work also aligns with a broader trend in contemporary sculpture toward ecological themes and artist-scientist partnerships.
