Stedelijk Museum Acquires Works from Seven Artists Following 'Circulate' Photography Biennial
Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam has organized the exhibition Circulate, featuring works by 21 artists who use photography in innovative ways. The show, which runs until March 23, 2025, includes many newly created works on view for the first time. The museum has acquired pieces from seven participating artists: Aimée Zito Lema, Vytautas Kumža, Kevin Osepa, Katja Novitskova, Mandy Franca, Jaya Pelupessy, and Robert Glas. Donations were also received from Vytautas Kumža and Aimée Zito Lema.
The Signal
The acquisitions underscore the Stedelijk's strategy to collect works at the intersection of visual arts and photography amid rapid changes driven by digitization, social media, and AI. Director Rein Wolfs noted the museum's early leadership in photography collecting and the need to track artists' fluid use of the medium. The exhibition, curated by Mirelva Berghout and Vincent van Velsen, signals institutional support for practices where meaning extends beyond traditional photographic frames.
