The Facts
The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam will host the annual Bathtub Lecture on November 12, 2026, featuring Dominique Petit-Frère, founder and director of Limbo Museum in Accra, Ghana. The lecture, titled "In-Betweenness," will explore the concept of museums as spaces of transition, relation, and possibility, challenging fixed categories of artworks, histories, and identities. Following the lecture, Yesomi Umolu, General and Artistic Director of Nieuwe Instituut, will respond, and the two will engage in a conversation moderated by curator Amanda Pinatih.
The Signal
Petit-Frère founded Limbo Museum in 2024 as an independent contemporary arts institution on the University of Ghana campus, housed in an unfinished concrete structure. The museum's incomplete architecture serves as both a physical condition and a curatorial premise, exploring how cultural institutions can be built and operated through their specific contexts. The Bathtub Lecture, an annual event at the Stedelijk, invites reflection on institutional practice at a time when cultural institutions are increasingly called upon to rethink how they collect, display, and produce knowledge, emphasizing complexity and multiple voices over definitive narratives.
