The Facts
The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam will present 'Common Practice – Collaborations in Art and Design' from November 28, 2026, to April 4, 2027. The exhibition, part of the museum's biennial Proposals for the Museum Collection series, focuses on collective artistic practices in the Netherlands and the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. Fifteen collectives were selected from 746 submissions via an open call, with a jury including Bik Van der Pol, Ebissé Wakjira, Lara Khaldi, and Lauren Alexander, alongside Stedelijk curators Claire van Els and Thomas Castro. The show features cross-disciplinary projects spanning publications, technology, graphic design, painting, performance, sculpture, video, activism, and social practice.
The Signal
The exhibition raises fundamental questions about how museums acquire and preserve practices that consist of relationships, shared knowledge, and networks rather than solely objects. By centering collective authorship and collaborative processes, 'Common Practice' challenges the traditional emphasis on individual authorship and permanence in museum collections. For collectors and curators, this signals a growing institutional recognition of non-object-based artistic labor and the need for new acquisition models that value methodologies and social infrastructures alongside finished works. The accompanying publication, designed by Kuan-Ting Chen with Thomas Castro, compiles fifteen individually designed artist booklets as a handbook for collective work.
