The Facts
HOMME PLISSÉ ISSEY MIYAKE and Tate have launched a 10-piece capsule collection inspired by Henri Matisse's The Snail (1953), one of the most iconic works in Tate's collection. The collection, unveiled at Tate Modern on 16 September through an OPEN STUDIO event with Dresden Frankfurt Dance Company, includes pleated clothing and accessories that translate Matisse's cut-out forms and color palette. Items include a button-front pleated cardigan, sleeveless tunic, short-sleeved T-shirt, long-sleeved pleated top, crossbody bag, and scarf. The collection launches on 17 September at Tate Modern's Terrace Shop and online, with wider availability from January 2027 in Tokyo, Osaka, and London.
The Signal
The collaboration reflects the growing trend of art-fashion crossovers that make iconic works accessible to new audiences, while generating revenue and cultural relevance for institutions. For collectors and curators, it demonstrates how museums like Tate leverage their permanent collection to engage beyond the gallery. The use of pleating technology to animate Matisse's cut-outs also highlights the intersection of design innovation and art appreciation, offering a tangible way to experience a masterpiece.
