Tate Britain Announces Turner Prize 2026 Shortlist; MIMA Middlesbrough to Host Exhibition
Tate Britain has shortlisted Simeon Barclay, Kira Freije, Marguerite Humeau and Tanoa Sasraku for the Turner Prize 2026. An exhibition of their work will be held at Teesside University’s MIMA, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, from 26 September 2026 to 29 March 2027. The winner will be announced on 10 December 2026 at an award ceremony at MIMA. Barclay is nominated for the performance The Ruin, Freije for the exhibition Unspeak the Chorus, Humeau for Torches and Sasraku for Morale Patch.
The Signal
The shortlist signals continued institutional emphasis on sculptural and installation practices addressing identity, ecology and geopolitics within contemporary British art. For collectors it indicates rising visibility for these four artists through major UK museum presentations ahead of the December decision. Tate’s partnership with MIMA extends the prize’s national reach following previous stagings in Gateshead, Hull and other cities.
