Tate Modern Opens Frida: The Making of an Icon Exhibition on Kahlo's Global Rise
Tate Modern opens Frida: The Making of an Icon on June 25, 2026, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The exhibition presents over 30 works by Frida Kahlo, including Self-Portrait (With Velvet Dress) 1926 and The Frame 1938, alongside photographs, personal artefacts and pieces by artists such as Diego Rivera, María Izquierdo, Kiki Smith and Yasumasa Morimura. It traces Kahlo's evolution from the 1920s through her surrealist connections, Chicana/o movement reception and later commercial legacy across more than 200 objects.
The Signal
The pairing of Kahlo's self-portraits with works by artists from Mexico, the Americas and Europe signals sustained institutional focus on her influence across identity, gender and disability themes. Collectors and curators can expect renewed attention to her market position as the show places her output in direct dialogue with living practitioners who continue to reference her iconography.
