The Facts

Tate Modern opens "Light and Magic: The Birth of Art Photography," the first major exhibition to treat Pictorialism as a global movement. Running October 14, 2026 to February 21, 2027 in the Eyal Ofer Galleries, it brings together 200 rare vintage prints by over 80 artists from Europe, the Americas, Asia and Australia across four thematic chapters. The show features Edward Steichen, Paul Strand and Edward Weston alongside lesser-known Chinese and Indian photographers such as Long Chin-san and Shapoor N. Bhedwar. Curated by Charmaine Toh and Genevieve Barton, it includes loans from the V&A.

The Signal

The show recasts Pictorialism as a worldwide network, potentially shifting how early art photography is valued and collected. By highlighting camera clubs in Shanghai, Seoul and Singapore and artists from Asia and South America, it signals institutional appetite for a more inclusive canon—and may direct collector interest toward vintage prints by under-recognized practitioners. A working darkroom and rare period journals frame the movement as a craft tradition with contemporary relevance.
