The Facts
The Bourse de Commerce — Pinault Collection in Paris has organized a series of thematic guided tours for its members, conducted in French, delving into themes from its exhibitions. The first tour, running from October 12 to November 7, pairs the photographs of Irving Penn and Raymond Depardon, focusing on portraits, still lifes, and landscapes. A second tour, from November 16 to December 5, examines photography's role in archaeology and anthropology, featuring Eugène Atget, August Sander, Depardon, and Walker Evans. A third tour, from December 14 to January 9, looks at shifting iconic identities in photography, including works by Richard Avedon, Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, Edward Steichen, Annie Leibovitz, and Zanele Muholi.
The Signal
The program reflects the collection's emphasis on photography as a core medium and its effort to deepen member engagement through focused, educational programming. The exclusive, member-only format, conducted in French, signals an intentional strategy to build a connoisseurial community around the collection. The thematic pairings also highlight how the museum positions canonical images against contemporary reinterpretations, notably through Zanele Muholi's critique of Orientalist conventions.
