Thaddaeus Ropac Announces Antony Gormley's 'Geestgrond' at KMSKA Antwerp
On May 23, 2026, Thaddaeus Ropac gallery announced Antony Gormley's exhibition 'Geestgrond' at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA). Featuring over 100 works spanning more than four decades, the show includes sculptures in clay, stone, wood, glass, bread, iron, lead, and steel. Curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, the exhibition places Gormley's work in dialogue with the museum’s architecture and works by artists including Ensor, Rodin, González, along with medieval and other pieces from KMSKA’s collection. Installed throughout the museum and extending beyond it, 'Geestgrond' unfolds as a continuous spatial experience rather than a series of isolated galleries.
The Signal
The exhibition provides a rare comprehensive survey of Gormley's practice, highlighting his sustained investigation of the body as a site of knowledge in an era of technological transformation. The title, a Dutch compound meaning 'spirit ground,' rejects the split between the spiritual and the material, grounding abstract thought in physical matter. For collectors and curators, the show underscores Gormley's ongoing relevance and his ability to engage with historical collections, reinforcing his market position as a leading contemporary sculptor.
