Thaddaeus Ropac to Present Solo Exhibition of Raqib Shaw Featuring Works Spanning Two Decades
Thaddaeus Ropac is presenting an exhibition of paintings by Raqib Shaw. Shaw creates the works by drawing enamel with porcupine quills to build intricately layered compositions that reference Renaissance painting, Japanese aesthetics, Persian, Mughal and Hindu art forms, Western literature and Jungian philosophy. The exhibition includes many works not previously shown in this country, among them The Retrospective 2002-2022 (2015-22), which contains miniature representations of more than 50 of Shaw's paintings and sculptures. A dedicated display illustrates his method of manipulating enamel and industrial metallic paints with a porcupine quill.
The Signal
The presentation underscores Shaw's established position in contemporary painting through the first public viewing of key works that incorporate personal motifs from his Peckham studio and Kashmir childhood. For collectors and curators the inclusion of self-portraits and depictions of his dogs offers direct insight into recurring autobiographical themes. The technique display provides concrete evidence of how Shaw achieves the sharp details and surface textures that define his market recognition.
