Tyler Mitchell's 'Time for a New Sky II' Debuts on High Line Billboard in New York
On June 29, 2026, High Line Art announced the installation of Tyler Mitchell's new work "Time for a New Sky II" (2026) on the High Line's Billboard Series at 18th Street and Tenth Avenue in New York. The piece, Mitchell's first large-scale public presentation, depicts a solitary figure attempting to pull a painted sky over the real sky, exploring themes of bodily suspension and the tension between natural and constructed landscapes. Curated by Cecilia Alemani, the billboard is sited on a historic billboard location at the gateway to the gallery district and will remain on view through September 2026.
The Signal
The Billboard Series continues High Line Art's tradition of commissioning site-specific public works that engage with the elevated park's identity as an invented landscape. For Mitchell, whose practice has gained prominence through fashion photography and explorations of Black identity, this public commission marks a significant expansion into monumental outdoor work. The piece's placement at a historic gallery-district gateway reinforces the High Line's role as a bridge between commercial art spaces and public art, offering collectors and curators a chance to see Mitchell's evolving practice in a highly visible, non-commercial context.
