Bangkok Art Biennial Announces Leiko Ikemura Participation
The Bangkok Art Biennial has announced the participation of Leiko Ikemura in its 2026 edition. Founded in 2017, the biennial transforms public spaces across Bangkok, including temples and heritage sites, into contemporary art venues over four months, aiming to position the city as Southeast Asia's leading contemporary art destination. Ikemura, known for luminous paintings, drawings, watercolours, glazed terracotta, glass, and ceramics, studied at Osaka University of Foreign Studies (1970–1972) and the University of Fine Arts in Seville (1973–1978). Recent exhibitions include Motherscape at Albertina, Vienna (2025), the Bienal de São Paulo (2025), and Light on the Horizon at HEREDIUM, Daejeon (2024).
The Signal
Ikemura's inclusion signals the biennial's continued strategy of pairing internationally recognized artists with Bangkok's unique urban and sacred sites, bridging Rattanakosin heritage with contemporary practice. For collectors, her participation may increase visibility for her cross-medium work, which spans painting, sculpture, and ceramics, and could influence market interest in Southeast Asian biennial platforms as venues for artist exposure. The biennial's focus on public spaces also underscores a broader trend of art events leveraging non-traditional venues to attract diverse audiences.
