The Facts
On October 28, 2026, the Van Gogh Museum announced the first retrospective of Eva Gonzalès (1847–1883), running February 12–June 20, 2027. Titled 'Eva Gonzalès. A New Perspective,' it is organized with the Petit Palais in Paris, which presents 'Eva Gonzales: The Journey of a Free-Spirited Artist' from September 15, 2026 to January 24, 2027. Featuring international loans, it is the largest assembly of her paintings and pastels ever mounted, following years of research into her life and work. Gonzalès, the only formal student of Édouard Manet, enjoyed exceptional success in the Parisian art world before her early death.
The Signal
Gonzalès's reputation was long overshadowed by her association with Manet, and she was often categorized merely as one of the 'female Impressionists.' This retrospective aims to reposition her as an independent artist who navigated tradition and innovation. For collectors and institutions, it underscores a growing reappraisal of female artists of the late nineteenth century, and the extensive international loans may signal rising market interest in her work.
