The Facts

White Cube has announced global representation of Japanese artist Shigeo Otake (b. 1955, Kobe). Developed over four decades, Otake's practice blends Early Italian Renaissance techniques such as egg tempera and fresco transfer with fantastical imagery of interspecies symbiosis and non-human agency. His compositions, populated by creatures, fungi, and flora, reference masters like Hieronymus Bosch and Pieter Bruegel the Elder, as well as Eastern iconography including Kawanabe Kyosai's Hyakki Yagyō. In autumn 2026, White Cube will present new paintings by Otake at Art Basel Paris (20–25 October 2026, Booth B34) and at West Bund Art & Design, Shanghai (10–15 November 2026, Booth 1F). A major two-part institutional survey organized by the Consortium Museum continues in Dijon, France until 21 March 2027. His work is also featured in group exhibitions at Whitechapel Gallery, London (until 8 November 2026) and Sophienholm, Denmark (until 17 January 2027).

The Signal

Otake's debut exhibition with the gallery, 'Shigeo Otake: Agoraphilia', was held at White Cube Hong Kong from 10 July to 29 August 2026. His first solo presentation in the UK is scheduled for spring 2028 at White Cube Mason's Yard, London. The representation signals White Cube's deepening commitment to artists whose work bridges Eastern and Western pictorial traditions while engaging contemporary ecological and social themes. For collectors, Otake's rising institutional presence—spanning surveys in France and inclusion in major London and Shanghai fairs—suggests growing market momentum for his singular vision.
