The Facts

On October 13, 2026, White Cube reported the unveiling of a three-storey mural of sculptor Richard Hunt by Chicago-based artist Chris Devins in the city's Hyde Park neighbourhood. The mural is located at 1515–19 E. 54th St., near several of Hunt's sculptures and the Obama Presidential Center, where one of Hunt's final works, 'Book Bird', is installed. The project was proposed by author and public historian Michelle Duster, the great-granddaughter of Ida B. Wells, who worked with Hunt for more than a decade on 'The Light of Truth: Ida B. Wells National Monument' in Bronzeville.

The Signal

The mural serves as a public tribute to Hunt, a major figure in 20th-century American sculpture whose work is deeply rooted in Chicago. Its placement near the Obama Presidential Center and Hunt's existing sculptures reinforces the city's commitment to integrating monumental art into civic spaces. For collectors and institutions, the mural may amplify interest in Hunt's legacy and the market for his works, particularly given its association with Duster's historical preservation efforts and the institutional imprimatur of the Obama Center.
