The Facts

Rudi Fuchs, the influential museum director, died in 2026 at age 84. Fuchs directed the Van Abbemuseum, the Haagse Gemeentemuseum, and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, and led Documenta 7 in 1982. He championed neo-Expressionism and unconventional exhibition-making, pairing works across styles in his "Couplets" series. At the Stedelijk, his 1993 inaugural exhibition "Het Materiaal" repainted galleries in pastel colors and broke with chronology. He acquired works by Georg Baselitz and other German artists, and supported young Dutch artists. His plan for a new wing by Álvaro Siza was never built, and he stepped down in 2003 after organizing the first survey of Tracy Emin's work.

The Signal

Fuchs viewed collecting as a dynamic process, seeking "audacious" works to keep collections in motion. He emphasized the autonomy of the artwork and direct visual encounter. His approach to dialogue between artworks influenced museum practice. Despite criticism for focusing on established names, his art-historical logic left a lasting impact. The Stedelijk Museum remembers his directorship as a period where tradition served as a backdrop for change.
