Whitechapel Gallery Announces Inaugural Backyard Biennial: East Festival in London
Whitechapel Gallery has initiated Backyard Biennial: East, an 8-week free summer arts festival in collaboration with more than 40 local partners across East London. The first iteration features exhibitions, installations, screenings, performances, workshops, residencies, walks, open studios and special events at venues including art galleries, cultural organisations, educational centres, places of worship and other public spaces. It celebrates the historic, cultural and creative identity of the East End while paying tribute to its diverse communities and industries. The project serves as a flagship of Whitechapel Gallery’s 125th anniversary year.
The Signal
The pilot reframes the biennial format around community participation and audience engagement, extending the gallery’s established work with local stakeholders to build sustainable cultural infrastructures. For curators and institutions, it signals a shift toward distributed, venue-agnostic models that prioritise grassroots networks over centralised programming. Collectors and artists may encounter expanded opportunities for site-specific projects and public-facing presentations outside traditional gallery walls.
