The Facts
Aguttes announced that its October 15, 2026 "Arts de la table" sale will feature five lots by 19th-century Brussels silversmith Joseph Germain Dutalis (1780-1852), a major figure in European silverware who served monarchies including King William I of the Netherlands and King Leopold I of Belgium. The lots include a sugar bowl dated 1794, a set of three salt cellars, two milk pots, and a sugar tong with an egg spoon. Dutalis's work has been documented in a 2004 monograph directed by Wim Nys, accompanying exhibitions at the Sterckshof Silver Museum in Antwerp and Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn. Viewing takes place from October 12 to October 14 at Aguttes Gennevilliers, 223 rue des Cabœufs, 92300 Gennevilliers, by appointment.
The Signal
This auction offers collectors a rare opportunity to acquire pieces from a silversmith whose work is both historically significant and well-documented through scholarly research. Dutalis's career spanned the transition from French to Dutch rule and the establishment of an independent Belgium, with his silver reflecting the shift from Neoclassical to Empire to Restoration styles. For decorative-arts collectors, the appearance of multiple Dutalis pieces from a single source—referenced in the 2004 monograph—may set a benchmark for 19th-century Belgian silver, a market segment that remains relatively under-explored at auction.
