The Facts
Artcurial will present its first sale dedicated to contemporary Latin American art, titled Amazonia Dream, from the collection of Victor Barrios Llanos, a former mathematics professor. The sale will take place from November 12 to 16, 2026, and features works by artists such as Sara Flores, Celia Vasquez Yui, Brus Rubio, Roldán Pinedo, Pablo Amaringo, and Petronila Cauper. The collection reflects the collector's deep engagement with Kené patterns of Peru's Shipibo-Konibo people, which he discovered in the 1990s while exploring fractal structures and the Peano curve. The works include ceramics, paintings, and textiles, with a notable kéné motif measuring nearly 1.5 × 2 meters created by Sara and Juana Flores using plant-based dyes on wild cotton canvas.
The Signal
The sale underscores the growing international recognition of Amazonian and Latin American contemporary art, a trend highlighted by the inclusion of Sara Flores and Celia Vásquez Yui in the 2026 Venice Biennale program. For collectors, this auction offers a rare opportunity to acquire works that bridge ancestral knowledge and contemporary expression, resonating with current themes of ecological awareness and alternative worldviews. The collection's connection to the 2024 exhibition "Shamanic Visions: The Art of Ayahuasca in the Peruvian Amazon" at the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac further positions these artists within a broader institutional narrative, suggesting a sustained market interest in this genre.
