The Facts
The Longlati Foundation in Shanghai will present 'The First Capriole for Tomorrow', a solo exhibition by Christine Ay Tjoe, from November 11, 2026 to March 21, 2027. Curated by Sun Wenjie, the show spans two galleries and features paintings alongside a site-specific installation. In the installation, typewriters are suspended from tracks near the ceiling and positioned along a curved gallery wall, referencing Ay Tjoe's 2010 work 'Lama Sabakhtani #03' and continuing her long engagement with the typewriter as a medium. The exhibition's title alludes to a capriole, an upward leap, reflecting the artist's concept of transition from one state to another.
The Signal
The exhibition marks Ay Tjoe's latest institutional presentation in Shanghai, underscoring the Longlati Foundation's focus on contemporary Asian and international artists. The typewriter installation, a recurring motif in her practice, highlights her exploration of language, communication, and materiality. For collectors, the show offers insight into Ay Tjoe's evolving sculptural and installation work, complementing her better-known paintings on paper and canvas. As a White Cube-represented artist, the exhibition signals her continued prominence in the Asian market.
