The Facts
On October 27, 2026, the Studio Museum in Harlem announced that its annual Gala, held October 26 at The Glasshouse in New York, raised $4 million to support exhibitions, programs, scholarship, and public outreach. The event celebrated the museum's first year in its new home on 125th Street and honored long-serving Trustee Raymond J. McGuire, now Chair Emeritus. More than 700 artists, cultural leaders, philanthropists, and civic officials attended, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Director and Chief Curator Thelma Golden presented the Joyce Alexander Wein Artist Prize to multidisciplinary artist Kevin Beasley, citing his innovation, promise, and creativity.
The Signal
The $4 million raised underscores strong donor confidence in the Studio Museum's mission following its move into a building designed by Adjaye Associates, which opened in November 2025. The prize, one of the largest for African American artists, adds Beasley to a distinguished roster of past winners. The gala also signals the museum's sustained institutional momentum, having successfully transitioned into its first purpose-built facility while maintaining its role as a sanctuary for Black art and culture in Harlem.
