Cleveland Museum of Art and MFA Boston to Launch Major Martin Puryear Retrospective
The Cleveland Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, co-organized Martin Puryear: Nexus, the most comprehensive exhibition of the American artist's career in nearly two decades. Developed in close collaboration with Puryear, born 1941, the show spans work from the early 1960s through new sculptures, iconic pieces, and works unseen publicly in decades before traveling to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Sculpture is presented alongside prints, drawings, and documentation of the artist's outdoor commissions worldwide.

The accompanying catalogue, published by the Cleveland Museum of Art with distribution by Yale University Press, features essays by Rizvana Bradley, Joan Kee, Emily Liebert, Michelle Millar Fisher, and Ugochukwu-Smooth Nzewi plus responses from Nairy Baghramian, Alex Da Corte, Thelma Golden, Tom Joyce, Maya Lin, Kerry James Marshall, Pam Paulson, Julia Phillips, Charles Ray, and Billie Tsien. It draws on unpublished archival materials to examine Puryear's engagement with global material culture, African American history, and the natural world.
