Galerie Max Hetzler Presents Matthew Barney's 'ZONE DEFENSE' Sculpture at Aspen Art Museum's AIR Festival
Matthew Barney has created "ZONE DEFENSE: Old Snowmass Parallax," a large-scale sculpture for the Aspen Art Museum’s AIR Festival. The work, described as a drawing in space, responds to the artist’s site-specific performance "TACTICAL parallax" from the festival's 2025 edition. Public viewing requires tickets and is scheduled for July 31. The announcement was made by Galerie Max Hetzler, which represents Barney.
The Signal
The sculpture extends Barney’s ongoing investigation into physical endurance, mythology, and material transformation, themes central to his practice since the "Cremaster" cycle. The AIR Festival placement signals continued institutional embrace of performance-derived sculpture in the American West. Separately, Barney was named an honorary member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, inducted in May 2024 into the Department of Arts.
