Galerie Max Hetzler Publishes Carroll Dunham Monograph 'Studio on Another Planet'
Carroll Dunham's new monograph "Studio on Another Planet" has been published, featuring his latest body of work that depicts a fictional sculptor's interplanetary voyage of self-discovery. The publication includes full-color reproductions, a critical text by author Naomi Fry, and an interview by fellow artist Matthew Ritchie. Additionally, the institutional solo exhibition "Carroll Dunham: Drawings, 1974–2024" is on view at the Art Institute of Chicago, marking the first museum presentation focused exclusively on his drawings. The exhibition spans a fifty-year period and includes many drawings making their public debut. A separate publication focusing on Dunham's 'Green Period' (2018–2022) is also available, bringing together prints, drawings, and paintings that explore themes of intimacy, race, sex, and aging.
The Signal
The new monograph and the concurrent museum exhibition underscore Dunham's rising institutional profile and the deepening recognition of his drawing practice as a central component of his work. For collectors, these publications offer a comprehensive look at two distinct phases of his career—the interplanetary narrative and the green-hued figurative works—providing valuable context for understanding his evolving painterly language. The Art Institute of Chicago's focus on drawings, a medium often secondary to painting in market terms, signals a curatorial shift that may elevate the value and visibility of Dunham's works on paper.
