Getty Center to Close for One Year Starting March 2027 for Campus Modernization; Getty Villa to Remain Open
The Getty Center will close to the public beginning March 15, 2027, with reopening planned for spring 2028. The closure will allow the most significant series of modernization initiatives since the 1997 opening, including HVAC system upgrades, gallery reinstallations, and improvements to accessibility and energy resilience. The Getty Villa will remain open throughout the period and will add a gallery featuring paintings from the Center's collection as well as other new offerings. Getty will also open a new programming space on Sepulveda Boulevard and has acquired a property in Westwood for scholar housing.
The Signal
The project reflects Getty's long-term institutional strategy to enhance sustainability and visitor experience ahead of the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic and Paralympic Games. By maintaining full programming at the Villa and expanding off-site venues, the institution signals a commitment to uninterrupted public access and partnerships while completing campus-wide infrastructure work that aligns with broader environmental pledges made with other Los Angeles and international museums.
