Kamasi Washington will perform his work Harmony of Difference at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art’s new David Geffen Galleries. The composer, bandleader and saxophonist will lead an ensemble of more than 100 musicians dispersed over approximately 110,000 square feet of gallery space in the building designed by architect Peter Zumthor. The performances on June 26, 27, and 28 mark the first public program in the new space. Many of the musicians are Los Angeles artists with whom Washington has collaborated throughout his career.

The Signal

The programming positions the museum’s new galleries as a venue for large-scale interdisciplinary events that treat architecture as an acoustic component. For curators and collectors it signals LACMA’s intent to expand institutional programming beyond static displays into immersive, site-specific presentations. Such initiatives can shape how museums integrate performance to activate new buildings and reach wider audiences.
