LACMA, Getty, and USC Fisher Museum Announce Coordinated Paul R. Williams Exhibition Series for 2026
Three major Los Angeles art institutions will present a coordinated series of exhibitions on architect Paul R. Williams from August 2026 through July 2027. The participating museums are Getty, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) and USC Fisher Museum of Art. Williams (1894–1980) was the first Black architect licensed west of the Mississippi, the first Black member of the American Institute of Architects and the first Black recipient of the AIA Gold Medal. Over nearly six decades he completed more than 3,000 projects.
The Signal
The multi-venue project brings renewed institutional focus to an architect whose work spans residential commissions, civic buildings and civil rights advocacy. Collectors and curators tracking twentieth-century design may encounter expanded scholarship and potential market attention for Williams material as a result of the three-museum collaboration. The partnership illustrates how Los Angeles institutions are aligning programming to address previously underrecognized figures in American architecture.
