Lehmann Maupin Announces Representation of Cecilia Vicuña
The Facts
Lehmann Maupin announced its representation of Chilean multidisciplinary artist Cecilia Vicuña. Vicuña, who lives and works in New York and Chile, creates work addressing ecological destruction, feminism, human rights, and cultural homogenization through poetry, performance, painting, and site-specific installations spanning over 40 years. Her inaugural exhibition with the gallery will open May 19 at 536 West 22nd Street in New York. The gallery also announced a joint project with the Brooklyn Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, scheduled for spring and fall 2018. Vicuña is known for her 'QUIPOems'—a fusion of poem and quipu—and her fragile, ephemeral 'precarios' sculptures made from natural and found materials.
The Signal
Vicuña's representation by Lehmann Maupin places her alongside a roster of artists who challenge historical narratives and colonial violence. Her work, which has been featured in Documenta 14 and the Whitney Biennial, has long been underassessed within the larger canon. This partnership signals growing institutional and market recognition for Latin American artists who address indigenous and ecological themes. For collectors, it marks an opportunity to acquire work by a seminal figure whose practice spans poetry, performance, and visual art.
