Lehmann Maupin Now Represents Heidi Bucher Estate
The Facts
Lehmann Maupin has announced its representation of the estate of Swiss artist Heidi Bucher, known for her latex-based explorations of the body, domestic space, and gender. Bucher's practice involved embalming clothing and peeling latex skins from architectural surfaces to create translucent, skin-like works. The gallery's director, Anna Stothart, noted that Bucher's focus on feminine-coded spaces aligns with the gallery's program and artists such as Do Ho Suh and Liza Lou.
The Signal
The representation brings Bucher's work into Lehmann Maupin's stable at a time of renewed institutional interest: her work is currently in group shows at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, D.C., through May 28, 2018, and at Nottingham Contemporary through June 24, 2018. A retrospective at Parasol Unit in London is scheduled for fall 2018, and Bucher's first solo show with the gallery is planned for spring 2019. The estate's representation signals the market's growing attention to overlooked female sculptors of the 1970s and 1980s, positioning Bucher alongside figures such as Eva Hesse and Rachel Whiteread.
