Lehmann Maupin Now Represents Billie Zangewa; New York Solo Show Set for September
The Facts
Lehmann Maupin has announced the representation of Malawian artist Billie Zangewa, who lives and works in Johannesburg, South Africa. The gallery will present recent work by Zangewa in Frieze Art Fair's Online Viewing Room launching this week. Her first solo presentation with Lehmann Maupin will open in New York this September, and her first solo museum exhibition is scheduled for 2021 at the Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) in San Francisco. Zangewa, born in Blantyre, Malawi in 1973, earned a BFA from Rhodes University in 1995 and is known for hand-stitched silk collages exploring identity, gender, and race.
The Signal
Zangewa's intricate textile works, which combine fashion and fine art, address overlooked gendered labor and challenge stereotypes of the black female form. Her addition to Lehmann Maupin's roster strengthens the gallery's focus on artists engaging with material culture and identity, alongside figures such as Nari Ward, Robin Rhode, and Nicholas Hlobo. The New York exhibition will likely draw collectors interested in contemporary figurative work with a strong social and political dimension, as well as those tracking the rising profile of African artists in the global market.
