M+, Asia's global museum of contemporary visual culture in Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District, has announced the seventh to ninth films under its M+ Restored initiative, supported by CHANEL. Newly restored in 4K in 2026 are Ann Hui's "The Story of Woo Viet" (1981), Yim Ho's "Homecoming" (1984), and Fruit Chan's "Durian Durian" (2000). The restored version of "The Story of Woo Viet" will have its world premiere in the Venice Classics section of the Venice Film Festival, while Allen Fong's "Just Like Weather" (1986), restored earlier this year, will premiere at the New York Film Festival. All nine M+ Restored titles will return to the big screen at M+ Cinema in autumn 2026, offering a rare opportunity to experience these classics in 4K.
The Signal
The M+ Restored program, launched in July 2023 as a three-year partnership between M+ and CHANEL, has increased the visibility of Hong Kong's cinematic heritage by presenting and leading the restoration of nine feature-length films. The initiative celebrates the creative experimentation and technical innovation of Hong Kong New Wave cinema, reintroducing landmark works to global audiences. Since their international debuts from 2025 onwards, films from M+ Restored have reached more than 115 screenings at film festivals and cultural institutions worldwide. The completion of this chapter reaffirms M+'s commitment to preserving and sharing Hong Kong's unique visual culture, with museum director Suhanya Raffel highlighting the program's role in deepening engagement with the city's rich film heritage.
