The Facts
On August 31, 2026, M+ in Hong Kong announced the touring of three newly restored 4K films from its M+ Restored initiative: Jacob Cheung's 'Cageman' (1992), Allen Fong's 'Just Like Weather' (1986), and Tsui Hark's 'The Butterfly Murders' (1979). The titles will be presented at international film festivals and at the M+ Cinema in autumn 2026. The first three M+ Restored titles—'The Arch' (1968), 'The System' (1979), and 'Love Massacre' (1981)—will also be available on Cathay Pacific's inflight entertainment system in autumn 2026, marking the first airline to offer 4K ultra-high-definition content onboard. Supported by CHANEL, the initiative has held nearly 100 screenings across 36 cities since its 2025 debut, including at Cannes, New York, and Tokyo film festivals.
The Signal
The M+ Restored initiative underscores the museum's strategic commitment to preserving and globalizing Hong Kong's cinematic heritage, particularly the Hong Kong New Wave movement. For collectors and curators, the restoration and distribution of these historically significant films—spanning social realism, experimental docudrama, and genre-defying wuxia—affirm the growing institutional value of Hong Kong's moving-image culture. The partnership with Cathay extends this reach to a captive international audience, positioning the films as accessible cultural assets beyond the festival circuit. This model of combined restoration, touring, and digital distribution may signal a new template for other museums seeking to expand the lifecycle and audience for archival film works.
