The Facts
M+ will present 'Myths and Monsters: The Art of Fantasy in Asia' at its West Gallery in Hong Kong from October 17, 2026 to April 4, 2027. The special exhibition surveys fantasy in Asian visual culture from the 19th to 21st centuries, with more than 400 works across contemporary art, architecture, fashion, video games, and film. Co-curated by Ulanda Blair and Isabella Tam, it is organized in four sections, from ukiyo-e prints and Tibetan Buddhist thangkas to Surrealist works and anime, including pieces by Takashi Murakami, Ho Tzu Nyen, and a new mural by Oscar Chan Yik Long. HSBC is lead sponsor.
The Signal
The exhibition positions fantasy as a critical lens for understanding socio-political change, linking historical folklore with contemporary digital culture. It reinforces M+'s role as a hub for pan-Asian narratives, connecting pre-modern spirituality to anime, gaming, and AI-generated imagery. For collectors and curators, the show signals a growing institutional interest in cross-disciplinary, region-spanning surveys, and it places Hong Kong at the center of the discourse. A co-published Thames & Hudson book accompanies the exhibition.
