MAM Rio to Host First Brazilian Edition of Daniel Buren’s 'Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile' Project
MAM Rio hosts the first Brazilian edition of Daniel Buren’s Voile/Toile – Toile/Voile from 24 February 2026 until 12 April 2026. The project, begun in 1975, transforms boat sails into an artistic medium and has previously been presented in Geneva, Lucerne, Miami and Minneapolis. It opened with a regatta-performance in Guanabara Bay featuring eleven Optimist sailboats carrying Buren’s vertical stripes, departing from Marina da Glória and activating the route to Flamengo Beach. The sails were subsequently installed at the museum in self-supporting structures arranged according to the order of arrival, following the protocol established in earlier editions.
The Signal
The Rio presentation extends Buren’s five-decade practice of creating works that engage directly with local landscapes and contexts while complicating the relationship between art and its framing structures. For curators and collectors it demonstrates the continued viability of site-responsive, performative projects that move between public space and institutional display, reinforcing Buren’s position within institutional programming across multiple continents.
