The Facts

On October 28, 2026, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art announced its 2027–28 exhibition lineup in Kansas City. 'Photography & Abolition' (May 8–Sept. 5, 2027) brings together more than 200 works from nearly 40 collections, including a rare daguerreotype believed to be the earliest image of enslaved African Americans with cotton, and contemporary pieces by Hank Willis Thomas, Carrie Mae Weems, Dawoud Bey, Nona Faustine and Sir Isaac Julien. 'French Connections: Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou' (Nov. 13, 2027–Feb. 27, 2028) is the U.S. debut stop for a traveling show of nearly 100 works, many never seen in the country. A Van Gogh exhibition (May 20–Sept. 4, 2028) will examine his debt to Medieval and early Renaissance art, with loans including Gauguin, Seurat and Bernard.

The Signal

The lineup positions the Nelson-Atkins as a presenter of revisionist, research-driven shows, from recasting postwar Paris as an enduring modern-art capital to tracing Van Gogh's medieval sources. It also gives audiences rare access to works that seldom travel. The museum is simultaneously advancing a multimillion-dollar renovation of the Bloch Building by New York architect WEISS/MANFREDI.
