Palazzo Reale to Host Robert Mapplethorpe Retrospective in Milan for 2026 Winter Olympics
The exhibition Robert Mapplethorpe. Le forme del desiderio presents a selection of iconic works by the American photographer at Palazzo Reale in Milan from January 29 to May 17 2026. Curated by Denis Curti the show forms the second part of a trilogy that began in Venice and continues in Rome. It is included in the cultural program of the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games and highlights Mapplethorpe's sensual nudes and formal studies of the human figure. A catalogue published by Marsilio Arte reproduces 257 works and a podcast titled Mapplethorpe Unframed is available on major platforms.
The Signal
The Milan presentation continues an institutional focus on Mapplethorpe's formal and erotic imagery across three Italian venues timed with the Olympic cultural calendar. Collectors and curators gain a sequenced view of the artist's development through distinct thematic lenses at each location. The accompanying publication and podcast extend access to the full scope of 257 works beyond the physical display.
