Uffizi Galleries Completes Restoration and Lighting Upgrade of Niobe Hall
The Uffizi Galleries has restored the Niobe Hall on the second floor with 90 energy-efficient lamps of high color rendering. The new lighting illuminates the sculptural group of Niobe and the Niobids, the ceiling stuccoworks and gold decorations by the Albertolli brothers, and monumental canvases by Rubens, Suttermans and Grisoni. Blackout curtains have been removed from outward-facing windows and replaced with ultraviolet-ray films, while a monumental Roman horse sculpture from the 1st-2nd centuries AD has been returned to the center of the room.
The Signal
The reinstallation advances the historical recomposition of the museum's collections and returns one of the principal Lorraine-era rooms to full legibility, director Simone Verde said. By making previously underlit paintings and architectural details newly visible, the project improves public access to core holdings and demonstrates the institution's ongoing focus on conservation and contextual presentation of its classical sculpture.
