The Uffizi Galleries has reopened the Royal Apartments at Palazzo Pitti following a five-year closure and nine months of restoration. The 14 rooms on the palace’s first storey, home to the Medici, Lorraine and Savoy dynasties for three centuries, received comprehensive conservation work on ceilings, floors, frescoes, stuccoes, silk wallpaper, drapery, paintings and furnishings. The apartments are now open daily with guided tours every hour. Director Simone Verde and curator Alessandra Griffo noted that the project followed the 1911 inventory layout with limited additions to highlight the Medici period.

The Signal

The reopening returns a major sequence of historic interiors to public view, preserving the layered decorative record of successive ruling houses in a single palace setting. For curators and collectors the project demonstrates how reference to period inventories and selective reintroduction of stored works can clarify dynastic narratives without altering established room sequences. It also illustrates the continued institutional priority placed on conserving original textiles, stuccos and parquet as primary documents of European court taste.
