WIELS to Present Portia Zvavahera Solo Exhibition Spanning Paintings and Ceramics
The Facts
WIELS in Brussels will present a solo exhibition of Zimbabwean artist Portia Zvavahera, featuring early paintings that explore womanhood and dreamlike imagery, alongside her first works in ceramics. The exhibition, curated by Sofia Dati, runs from October 31, 2026 to February 2, 2027. It is organized in collaboration with Fridericianum in Kassel, as well as galleries David Zwirner and Stevenson, which represent the artist. Zvavahera's work blends Christian and Shona spiritual traditions with personal and collective experience.
The Signal
The exhibition marks Zvavahera's first institutional solo show in Belgium and highlights her expansion into ceramics, a new medium for the artist. Her distinctive visual language—incorporating textile patterns, religious iconography, and Zimbabwean figuration—has earned her growing attention in Europe and the US, where David Zwirner recently presented her work. The collaboration with Fridericianum signals potential for the exhibition to travel, though no further venues have been announced.
