The Facts
On September 8, 2026, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) announced it will open its doors for free on Heritage Day, Thursday, September 24, 2026, from 10 am to 6 pm. The programme includes guided exhibition tours, multilingual architecture tours of the historic Grain Silo, and hands-on workshops such as the Silo Tote Bag workshop for teens and adults, plus a new workshop for younger visitors inspired by current exhibitions. An outdoor food court with live music from V&A Buskers and other local groups will also be featured. Liesl Hartman, Head of the BMW Centre for Art Education, said the day is about celebration and remembrance, welcoming South Africans to share stories from Africa and its diaspora. Talia Naicker, Education Manager and Heritage Day Project Manager, described the event as an opportunity to connect, learn, and celebrate together.
The Signal
The free-entry day underscores Zeitz MOCAA’s institutional commitment to accessibility and community engagement, positioning the museum as a central cultural hub in Cape Town. By offering multilingual tours and a digital companion via the Bloomberg Connects app, the museum aims to broaden its audience and reinforce its role as Africa’s leading contemporary art institution. For collectors and curators, such public programming signals a strategic investment in local audiences and long-term institutional relevance, even as the museum continues to rotate exhibitions from its permanent collection and host international shows.
