Zona Maco Founder Zélika García Reflects on Two Decades of Building Mexico City's Art Ecosystem
Zélika García, founder of ZSONAMACO, discussed the fair's evolution over more than 20 years in an interview published on June 29, 2026. García stated that the fair was launched not to prove a market existed but to address a real gap: a lack of a professional, consistent platform connecting artists, galleries, collectors, and institutions in Mexico. She noted that the risk was justified by the presence of an active artistic community and a long-term vision, understanding that a market is built through sustained work and trust. The fair has since become a central node in Mexico City's Art Week, activating museums, galleries, foundations, and independent spaces.
The Signal
García emphasized that keeping a fair relevant requires constant care, context, and trust in a changing world. She highlighted the integration of Aimé Iglesias Lukin's curatorship for ZSONAMACO EJES, a section focused on exchange and dialogue, and the launch of ZSONAMACO FORMA, a new initiative connecting art, design, and collectible objects. García, who began her career as an artist, said this background shapes the fair as a platform that respects creative processes and supports long-term work. The interview underscores ZSONAMACO's role in positioning Mexico City as a vibrant, diverse, and constantly evolving cultural destination.
