Getty Publications Releases New Scholarship on Michaelina Wautier and Anne Vallayer-Coster
Getty Publications has issued two new volumes, Michaelina Wautier by Katlijne Van der Stighelen and Anne Vallayer-Coster by Kelsey Brosnan. The studies examine the careers of the 17th-century Brussels painter Michaelina Wautier (1614–1689) and the 18th-century Paris painter Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744–1818), both of whom secured elite patronage and academy recognition during their lifetimes yet later saw works misattributed or overlooked. Wautier produced large-scale multifigure compositions acquired by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, while Vallayer-Coster exhibited at the Salon and held Louvre lodgings granted with support from Queen Marie Antoinette.
The Signal
The publications place the artists within the institutional structures of the early modern period and document how those structures affected later reception. Wautier’s output has moved from near-total obscurity into public view following exhibitions and research, while Vallayer-Coster’s still lifes are now read in relation to Enlightenment debates on observation and material culture rather than solely as decorative works. The books demonstrate how scholarly reassessment can restore women artists to the central narrative of European art history.
