Other Hauser & Wirth

Hauser & Wirth launched its Learning program at its New York 18th Street location on November 10, 2023, with the panel series 'Learning Exchange: Art Education Matters'. The event featured conversations led by artists, educators, and scholars including Angel Otero, Mickalene Thomas, Rika Burnham, and Adjoa Jones de Almeida, exploring how exhibition spaces influence learning, mentorship, and innovative teaching approaches. The series was chaired by Debbie Hillyerd, the gallery's Senior Director of Learning, and builds on existing partnerships with Hunter College, Culture for One, and Project EATS. The program is housed in a new dedicated space for Hauser & Wirth Publishers, Editions, and learning initiatives in West Chelsea.

The Signal

The launch signals a deepening commitment by commercial galleries to education and community engagement as core programmatic pillars, moving beyond transactional sales relationships. By dedicating physical space to learning and hosting interdisciplinary dialogues, Hauser & Wirth positions itself as a platform for critical discourse and mentorship, mirroring the growing trend of galleries functioning as cultural institutions. The inclusion of artists and educators from diverse institutions — from the Brooklyn Museum to Columbia University — reflects an effort to build sustained, collaborative networks that extend the gallery's influence into broader arts education ecosystems.
