On September 16, 2026, Kunstmuseum Brandts announced that it will open a major solo exhibition of Canadian artist Tau Lewis, titled "Mouth Close to Earth," in Copenhagen. The exhibition, which runs from September 19, 2026, to May 2, 2027, is the artist's largest to date and marks her first solo show in Scandinavia. It is created in collaboration with Tramway art gallery in Glasgow and the Performa Biennale in New York, reflecting the museum's increased focus on international collaborations.
The exhibition features large tapestries, wall-hung masks, and human-high sculptures made from recycled materials such as old strips of fabric, skins, and shells. Lewis's works address themes of displacement, sustainability, climate crisis, and spirituality, drawing on the myth of the Sumerian goddess Inana, one of the oldest recorded stories, dating from around 2300 BC. Several works were created specifically for the exhibition in Odense, and a soundscape was developed in collaboration with composer and musician Lyra Pramuk. Lewis's slow, hand-stitched process, rooted in her Jamaican heritage, serves as a countermeasure to the fast pace of contemporary society.
