The Facts
The inaugural Bienal de Yucatán, titled VOCAL, will open on 26 November 2026 across 16 venues in Mérida and Maní, Mexico, running until 28 February 2027. Artistic director Abraham Cruzvillegas has selected 76 artists for the biennial, including Lisson Gallery representatives Wael Shawky and Pedro Reyes. The exhibition explores language in its spoken, written, and translated forms, with a focus on intercultural dialogue and the artistic community of the Yucatán peninsula.
The Signal
The biennial is supported by patron and collector Catherine Petitgas, who founded the initiative Proyecto Y to develop emerging artists in the region. By staging a major international biennial in Yucatán, VOCAL aims to increase the area's visibility in the contemporary art world and create new opportunities for artistic exchange, particularly for local practitioners who have historically been underrepresented on a global scale.
