Kunsthaus Zürich to Reopen Collection Rooms in March and April After Fire
On January 25, 2023, Kunsthaus Zürich announced that its collection rooms will reopen in stages between March and April 2023, following a fire in the packing room in August 2022. The fire led to the closure of many galleries, requiring refurbishment of ceilings, floors, and walls, as well as cleaning of some 700 paintings and sculptures. During the work, traces of asbestos were discovered on concealed building components, though no airborne particles were detected. The museum also took the opportunity to improve acoustics in the entrance hall. The reopening will include the entrance hall and Müller building in early March, and the Moser building in early April, featuring Old Masters, Swiss art, and works by Alberto Giacometti, Henry Fuseli, Ferdinand Hodler, Marc Chagall, Paul Klee, and Edvard Munch, along with new acquisitions.
The Signal
The protracted closure underscores the challenges museums face in balancing preservation with public access. The reopening will reintroduce familiar highlights while debuting recent acquisitions, including works by Ella Littwitz, Robert Rauschenberg, and Hiwa K, signaling the museum's continued commitment to expanding its collection. The asbestos remediation, though unexpected, ensures long-term safety, and the upgraded acoustics should enhance the visitor experience in the bustling Moser foyer.
