Good morning. A quiet Sunday, but Seoul's galleries are already gearing up for Frieze next week — Gladstone opens new space tomorrow.

THE LEAD

Ryoji Ikeda Wins 9th Nam June Paik Prize

via Almine Rech

The 9th Nam June Paik Prize has been awarded to Ryoji Ikeda, a Japanese composer and artist known for his precise mathematical explorations of sound and light. The prize is given by the Nam June Paik Art Center, directed by Namhee Park. Ikeda's practice bridges visual art and sonic art, creating immersive live performances and installations that orchestrate sound, physical phenomena, and mathematical notions.

The Nam June Paik Prize, awarded every two years, goes to an artist who extends Paik's fusion of technology and sensory precision — Ikeda is a fitting heir.

Signal of the Day

The Ikeda prize is a welcome shift: media art, not painting, gets the nod from a major foundation.

The Week in Brief
The Pattern

Four of this week's 44 exhibitions cluster in Seoul, ahead of Frieze. Paris still dominates overall with 15 events, but the center of gravity is sliding east.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow, Gladstone Gallery opens its expanded Hannam-dong space in Seoul; Frieze Seoul follows Wednesday with 125+ galleries.
