THE LEAD

Tate Modern to Present UK's First Major Ana Mendieta Exhibition in Over a Decade

via Tate

Tate Modern will open the UK's first major exhibition dedicated to multidisciplinary artist Ana Mendieta (1948-1985) in over a decade, running from July 15, 2026 to January 17, 2027. Featuring over 120 works, the show is arranged thematically through symbolic locations and includes her iconic Silueta Series (1973-80), newly remastered films, rarely seen paintings and drawings, late sculptures, and restaged installations. The exhibition highlights Mendieta's 'earth-body' works, which outline her body in the landscape using natural elements, and explores her experience of displacement after being exiled from Cuba to the United States at age 12. Co-curated by Valentine Umansky, Michael Wellen, and Elsa Collinson, the exhibition is supported by the Ana Mendieta Exhibition Supporters Circle, Tate International Council, and Hyundai Tate Research Centre: Transnational.

Tate Modern's Ana Mendieta exhibition, opening tomorrow, is the institution's most consequential Latina feminist survey since its own 2017 Frida Kahlo show—expect crowd metrics and secondary-market interest to follow.

Signal of the Day

London's summer show roster tilts heavily institutional today: 10 exhibition openings this week, zero from commercial galleries in the top-tier list.

The Week in Brief
The Pattern

Exhibition openings dominate (29 of 54 stories), but London alone accounts for 10 of those—New York has only 7 total stories. Auctions are sparse at 8, and no single house has announced a headline evening sale for this month yet.

Looking Ahead

Tomorrow's anchor: Tate Modern opens Ana Mendieta. Later this week: Hauser & Wirth's Glenn Ligon youth project on Friday, and Daniel Buren's solo show at Musée des Impressionismes Giverny same day.

Why it matters
Rauschenberg's centennial year is driving gallery retrospectives at Thaddaeus Ropac and museum reappraisals, but his 10,000-work corpus means the market has not yet settled on a canonical late-career price ladder.
